Voicing the dividing line
Realization: Thursday 11 August 2011
Location:
along the border within Nicosia walls, from west to east and back to the
west.
Duration: 1:30 hours
Description of action:
I am walking along the buffer
zone and during my walk I use my voice to talk to and about the border of
Nicosia.
The sound recording includes an
amalgamation of sounds: the sound of the surrounding environment, people’s
talks, cars passing by, the steps of the artist, the breath of the artist’s
body, then her voice. The voice describes the phenomena and events that occur,
the natural elements of the place, and what feelings, sensations or situations
they create for the body. The mind creates shifts between the different ways it
experiences the border in relation to the position of the body: along, across,
in front of, behind, next to and on the border.
The sound of the voice suggests the
experience of the body on the border through its rhythm, pace, dynamics, pauses
and expressions. The sound of the voice appears to be more important than the
language, which is spoken, as the words and phrases, which are used, can produce only
subjective feelings, but the voice itself cannot hide its psychological and
physical condition.
